Hi,
Could anybody show me a step by step guide to install nvidia driver on fedora core 3? The instruction on nvidia website is too long (54 pages) and it makes me confused!!!
Thanks in advance!
telinit 3
sh /path/to/nvidia/driver.run
<your fave text editor, e.g. nano / pico / emacs> /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# comment out the line at the drop that loads dri
# find the line "Driver "nv"" and replace nv with nvidia.
# reboot.
http://www.fedorafaq.org/ is a great site for Fedora Core 3. http://www.fedorafaq.org/#nvidia will take you right to the nvidia instructions. Note, this uses RPM's from the 3rd-party pool livna.org, and requires you to use a modified yum.conf file which can be found on the same site. I do not know if these RPM's are up to date with the newest nvidia version, but they should still work fine if you don't have something new like a 6600. Good luck.
Chances are, if you use nvidia.com's .run driver it simply won't work. This is the case with most distros. I've heard it explained by someone, something about the kernel stack sizes being too small, but I don't know about that. If those .run drivers from nvidia.com work then by all means good deal, but I've been burned by those so many times with newer distros.
Remember, if you follow qwijibow's directions and reboot and it won't bring up graphical login (you're stuck at a text-only prompt, just edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf again to change the "nvidia" under Devices back to the generic "nv".
they fixed that stack problem a while ago.
when the linux kernel people (or a compan patches the kernel) in unusual / unpredictable ways, it takes the nvidia guys a few weeks to fix there drivers to match.
and ive sed redhat9 fedora 1,2, and gentoo.
and the nvidia.run has always worked perfectly.. except for on my AMD64 gentoo.
i had to use gentoo's own method for that.
These are the best and easiest instructions I have found on getting your nvidia card to work with Fedora Core 3. I'm a total newb and I had it working in minutes after following these fool proof instructions. I play rad 3d games now. Later.
