Nvidia 440mx debian etch on samsung 940bw

request to experienced contributor, newbies can skip this one..

trying to get samsung 940bw working correctly under X in etch...

tried NVIDIA installer and the debian way multiple times with cleanup afetr each. no joy. blank screen. black. no cursor. forced to reboot.

with ref to this doc:
Debian Wiki NvidiaGraphicsDrivers document - Troubleshooting -X doesn't start section - my replies in brackets ()

*

Make sure the nvidia module is loaded into your kernel:

$ lsmod | grep nvidia

(yes, it is)
If it's not, then use modprobe or modconf to load it, or else have it load automatically at boot by adding nvidia to /etc/modules.
* Check that you have device files /dev/nvidia0 and /dev/nvidiactl:

$ ls -l /dev/nvidia*
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 0 date /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 255 date /dev/nvidiactl
(yes, it is)

In Sarge, those files should be created by udev or devfs when the nvidia kernel module is loaded. Therefore, the absence of these files is most likely to be fixed by the previous solution. If the module is loaded but the files aren't created, you should verify that either udev or devfs is working correctly. If you use a kernel above 2.6.12, nvidia-kernel-common's /etc/init.d/nvidia-kernel is responsible for creating those files.
*

Make sure that your problem is related to the nvidia driver. Try switching back to a free driver: go back and repeat step 3, but this time select driver nv or vesa instead of nvidia. Then restart your X server.
(yes, can do)
If it still won't start, then you have other problems that precede NVIDIA's drivers.
* Make sure that the file "nvidia_drv.o" is specified in the Xorg.0.log file, i.e that it has been loaded by X.
(yes, it is loaded)

You need to make sure that "module version" is the same for all of these.

(yes, all same)

here is xorg logfile:

What happens if you comment out "load GLX" in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

This is what my xorg.conf looks like. Maybe it will help you in tweaking yours.

Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName "Monitor 1280x1024"
        HorizSync 31.5 - 79.0
        VertRefresh 50.0 - 90.0
        Option "dpms"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "nVidia Corporation Unknown device 01df"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "Videocard0"
        Monitor "Monitor0"
        DefaultDepth 16
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport 0 0
                Depth 16
                Modes "1152x864_75" "1024x768_85" "800x600_85" "640x480_85"
        EndSubSection
        SubSection "Display"
                Viewport 0 0
                Depth 24
                Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        EndSubSection
EndSection
Try adding a Modes section to your xorg.conf which includes the resolution you wish to run at, and its refresh rate.

Also you are using the old drivers, because the new 169 series doesnt support 440mx cards.

re Nvidia 440mx debian etch on samsung 940bw

if i comment out glx; X loads! nvidia logo appears and desktop is at correct size (almost fills widescreen) but a little blurry, particularly text. suspect that is due to other errors reported in xorg.conf i.e. fonts etc. had same blurry problem with ubuntu, which i fixed with some tweaking - need to refresh my memory on this (see my previous threads)

so no glx means waht? suspected that X was failing at glx load time, as per log file.

thank you very much jlinkels

See my xorg.conf above. If I remember correctly that was the line that cleared up the blurriness on mine.

GLX has to do with hardware accelleration. For example graphic programs use it heavily. You can do without if you just do text processing or as long as you don't notice any sluggishness.

I can't tell you what is happening, I run kernel 2.6.18-4-k7, and I have nvidia driver 1.0.8776 like you and a MX440 and I don't see any problems.

However I remember something I ran into two years ago and if I remember well it was the same error you had. I did have to do something with GLX. You might try to google with terms as nvidia, glx, hang.

Sorry that I cannot help you any further at the moment.

thanks for responses. will research glx problem on other forums.

now i remember GLX, it's openGL and all that stuff.

do you know what glx packages (plus versions) are required? will compare against what is installed on my system.

btw, i'm using analog vga connection.

just to finsh on this, a reintall of glx packages fixed the problem.
i managed to get x working perfectly with my samsung 940bw using the debian package method.
i suspect the nvidia installer (previous install attempt) broke the original GLX install.
i found it difficult to test if glx was working, ended up installing GL screensaver set, can confirm GLX is now working and X server loads and runs without problems.

xorg log still complains about not being able to find fonts but will fix this soon.
