not sound on toshiba laptop running linux MINT


hey i just installed linux mint, this is my first experience with linux ever and so far i am very impressed. the only problem i am having is that i cant get any sound to work at all. i googled the problem and poked around a couple forums but all of the "fixes" i found either didnt work or were above my skill level. i did learn that the info below shoudl be helpfull:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC262 Analog [ALC262 Analog]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

also the laptop in question is a toshiba tecra A8
