Pink, being the mic input, may not be the best choice. Mic inputs are (or used to be. haven't destroyed a newer soundcard recently, so haven't checked recently) generally mono. THUS you lose a sound channel. It may work, but if alsa works (Still working on that part) then why not just do that? On that note, could someone who uses a P4PE send me a copy of their modules.conf? I can't get it to work and I think I am just using a bad identifier. Sorry, not posting email, so if you could just post up the [alias snd-card-0 *] line that would be great. Thanks.

The pink (mic) jack I found out last week, when someone had helped me config this onboard sound. But I hosed the system beyond repair (by me) when I wrote something wrong copying and pasting a shell script he sent. So, yesterday I did a low level format and then reinstalled. Now I got no sound, and don't know how to get it back, either.

The pink output worked for a while...
 

I've been running mandrake 9 then 9.1 on my P4PE with ADI AD1980 6-Channel audio. When I first set up my computer I discovered the pink jack trick (the audio on my computer comes out of the pink jack apparently designated for the microphone input.) I've never used windows on this box so I'm not sure how it behaves. After a few months of using some powered speakers attached to the pink jack on the back of the computer, the speakers started making a constant groaning sound. I disconnected the speakers and tried a new pair. The new pair groaned the way the old pair did. When I connect headphones to the pink jack they still work fine. I'm trying to connect a spare receiver to my computer and it makes awful sounds like the old speakers while my headphones sound great.

I Figure I either fried something buy running the speaker out through the microphone jack or this is just an annoying bug. Curious if anyone else has experienced something familiar.

That's an old thread, but it appears I'm still subscribed to it.

What I found after that, is that you need to install the ALSA sound module for this onboard sound to work properly. You can search threads for how to do this. I've done it under Debian now, having run from the bloated RedHat distro I was using at the time of these old posts.

I don't know what is the cause of your problem now, but I hope you haven't fried the southbridge chip, or whatever runs the onboard sound. Before running anything else out of the mic jack, I'd be certain to get some expert opinion. Maybe even have your motherboard checked by someone reputable. Where do you live? If in the U.S., I seriously doubt if such a person exists in a chain type computer store.

Maybe you can post a new thread of your own and someone who really knows what they're doing will respond. Don't just blindly follow anyone's advice, as we're all free to give it in LQ, and sometimes it may be just an educated guess (the reason I don't post the way I installed ALSA in Debian for you to do in Mandrake).

Hope you get it solved, and there's no damage to your board!

Maybe it would be a good idea to post in the Distribution forum and get some direction for installing ALSA under Mandrake. It's obvious you made it here by searching the forums, so I don't think you'd mind waiting a little longer. The distro forum probably gets less hits, but more specific posts and less of us newbies, I'd think.

I have the same problem - I get sound out of the MIC output and it is also stereo. But now I have connected an analogue TV card to the MIC input (the Line In is used by a DVB-C card) and need to get sound out of the normal (lime green) Line Out. I know it's a routing problem, but does anyone know how to fix this?
I use ALSA 0.9pre6 on Mandrake 9.0

In their new release - 9.0 - SuSE have backported some parts of the new 2.6 kernel, including the ALSA sound modules.

Haven't got the full version yet, but when I tried their evaluation version - that runs from a CD - my sound was automatically configured on install and worked perfectly straight away.

Looks like this is another solution for anyone who doesn't want to screw around with modules themselves.

The PowerEdge 400SC Integrated Audio uses the AD1980. Just posting this, because it took me forever to find this link and I'm sure somebody else is looking for information on this. This is the link to the ALSA sound device driver.

I am using SuSE 8.1 Professional Linux.

Freshrpms has got some handy rpms for Redhat/Fedora users. After my futile attemts at trying to compile the source myself, I decided to give the rpms a shot .. and guess what, they work! The documents on how to install the rpms is here . The binary files (specially the kernel-modules) there however only apply to the latest version of the official kernel for a distro, so better check the version numbers first!

The GNOME-ALSA mixer is also a pretty handy addon.
