No sound under Mandrake 9.0
Just installed Mandrake 9.0 as dual-boot on my XP machine. Everything works fine apart from the sound - can't get a peep out of it. I know there's nothing wrong with the hardware because it works fine under XP.
I have an Asus P4PE board with onboard sound through a SoundMax CODEC, but when I run HardDrake it detects the Intel ICH4 chip instead - don't know if this is the problem. Anyway, neither the Asus, nor the SoundMax site has a Linux driver. Any ideas as to what I should do? This is my first try with Linux after years of Windows, so be kind! thanks |

*This article is from google groups* Article 1 Unless there are other amplifiers on the P4PE or better amplifiers on the AD1980, my guess is you'll have to connect P4PE to amplified speakers or to your stereo. I'm assuming here, of course, that the mixer and control panels have been properly configured to deliver sound, and there are no question marks in the device manager. Usually the defaults for sound chips "just work" after an install. Article 2 If you don't get sound on the lime green connector, plug your stereo into the other two jacks on the back of you computer as well - a Linux user reports that under Linux, the sound comes out on the wrong connector! I just set up one of these boards myself and this is what I found... With the jumpers shorting the first and third on the front panel audio connections the sound works from the center jack on the back of the MB... but it is important that you put the connector on the correct pins on the FP Audio jumpers..it seems to only work on the Line_Out_R and L...NOT BLINE_Out See if that helps |
Do "lspci -v" (as root) and post the info on the Multimedia Audio Controller.

Ok, you can try alsa with this motherboard and have a look on the cd that came with it to see if there is a linux sound driver.

there are no linux drivers on the CD, so I guess its alsa.
Anyone know an idiot's guide to installing alsa? I might already have it - I've found a directory /usr/share/alsa - but don't know what to do next... |
Go to alsa-project.org and look for your chip in the sound card matrix.

Not sure if I should be looking for support for the Intel ICH4 Chipset (that Linux sees as my 'soundcard') or the ADI1980 Codec.
In either case, can't find any mention on the alsa site, though there does seem to be support for a whole bunch of other AD chips (1881, 1885). Is this the end of the line? |

Hi, i used the tip in this thread about trying different outputs and that solved it for me.
I also have an Asus P4PE (the extended version with sata, raid and gbit lan) and just installed Mandrake 9. The default settings that mandrake detected at first gave me no sound under KDE, but after plugging my speakers into the PINK connector on the backplate of the mainboard the test sound works. Maybe this will help other people having similar trouble. |
In the end Alsa was the answer.
I downloaded and installed the development release 0.9.0rc6, and am now using the snd-intel-8x0 driver with no problems. |

On a P4PE the pink connector seems to be the answer .. ;)

You need to get the alsa drivers from www.alsa-project.org, then:
1. Install the drivers (simple ./configure; make; make install) 2. Edit your modules.conf file as described in the documentation section of the alsa site 3. Use alsamixer to unmute the channels (for some reason alsa mutes everything by default) 4. Everything should now work. You might want to get hold of the alsaplayer for playing mp3s. good luck bjb |
