New harddrive causes hangs

I've just added an old Seagate ST-31720A, Medalist 1720 AT too my small router system.

upon booting (aswell as is logs and at other random times) I see the following mesgs.

hdb: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
hdb: drive not ready for command
hdb: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
hdb: drive not ready for command
ide0: reset: success

my /usr is mounted on one of it's partitions and causes regular hands (like almost every boot within a few minutes)

Any suggestions?

I've added the line:

append="ide=nodma"
to my lilo.conf and that seems to have removed the errors from dmesg.... Question is why wouldn't the disk work before?

I've had a couple of hangs since but i think that's anther issue to do with my modem drivers.

My experience with those errors have been a bad hard disk.
