Mounting EMI copy-protected CDs in Linux

Hi. I have an EMI copy-protected CD which has a video track. I can try and play the video track using gmplayer, but it complains about an encrypted VOB file, and the video plays but is corrupted with the standard random blocks all over the place.

According to what I can find online, there should be a file player.exe on the disk that I can use to play the file. I'd like to try running this under wine. I have had success with this strategy before.

But I don't know how to mount the disk to access the data. Just trying to mount /media/cdrecorder doesn't work as it can't determine the format and none was specified. Any hints as to how to do this?

Thanks in anticipation,

Ross-c

CD and DVD do not get effected by EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). What you are seeing is an encrypted movie. You have to download DeCSS library that will decrypt the video. Also you may have to re-compile the media player.

Linux does not work with .exe files.

I suggest mplayer because you get better results. Using WINE is useless.

Methinks Ross may have meant EMI the recording company, rather than EMI the phenomenon of physics.

I do agree that mplayer should play this. It can be installed from one of Packman's repositories (e.g. http://packman.iu-bremen.de/).

Yes, I do mean the company <johnny rotten voice> EMI </johnny rotten voice> not the well known form of radiation.

I do have a reasonably complete and recent mplayer and it was the first thing I tried. It plays the video if I use gmplayer and open the CD as a VCD. But the video is corrupted. I think mplayer complained about an "encrypted VOB file" or suchlike, though I may have misremembered and it may have been ogle.

I have had success using record-company supplied player programs and wine before. Hence I thought it was worth a shot to try again. But I can't mount the CD as a data CD, and hence can't view the raw files.

Even if there is another way of playing the video I would still like to know how to mount these mixed-mode CDs as data cds.

Cheers,

Ross-c

Just found one of these copy protected CDs on my shelf (though this one does not have any video tracks on it). When I try to open it via the desktop icon, it crashes Nautilus. I can mount it from the command line, but it shows only the player applications and other (non-music) files.

A workaround that may help, though: Use K3B to create a copy of the disk. When I did this (checking the "just create image" box) it created a folder with a small (around 150MB) iso file and the music tracks as wav files. It may manage to extract the video files as well...
