I've been having this problem lately with my ViewSonic A90f 19" monitor. At random intervals, the entire screen will turn a yellow tint. The yellow lasts anywhere from a fraction of a second to several seconds. It's really annoying. Plus, this happens in Windows, too. So, I'm forced to believe it's a hardware problem.
All of my hardware is relatively new. I don't do much gaming. All my drivers are up-to-date. I do leave my computer on most of the time, but I set it to turn off the monitor after 15 minutes.
So, any suggestions on what I should do? The only thing I can think of, rather than getting a new monitor or video card, is perhaps a firmware update for some of my hardware... ??
Is your monitor close to other electrical equipment? As you know, an electrical current induces a magnetic field, and the magnetic field can interfere with your monitor display. As an example, every time my coworker in the next cube powers on her monitor, the image on my monitor gets scattered. It's only momentary, but it was annoying, and I solved it just by moving my monitor farther away from hers.
Next time you observe this behavior, did something else nearby just turn on? (like a refrigerator, or the A/C, the garage door opener, etc. Note that if your monitor is right against the wall it could also be something that somebody in the next room is doing too) If so, the solution is probably just to move the monitor to a different location. If your monitor works correctly 99% of the time, I'm pretty sure that everything's fine, it's just that something external is causing interference. -- J.W.
Ah yes. I didn't even consider interference. I've got a UPS quite close to my monitor, so that's probably the main source. There may be power lines running through my wall near the monitor as well, but given the size and layout of my room, I really can't move my monitor anywhere.
So, I'll move my UPS and see if that solves the problem.
Thank you so much for reminding me of such a simple troubleshooting technique. It's funny how we (or maybe just I) forget the simple things.
Sudden, erratic yellow tint could also be caused by losing the blue color in your monitor. Could be a gun that's cutting out or a loose connection of some kind. I had a monitor that did this (except it turned purple; green was the problem), and ended up paying way too much for someone to fix it. With luck it is simply an environmental factor. Check out your video cable where it's plugged into the monitor and video card, though - see if wiggling the cord while the screen is yellow has any effect. If so, it might just be a loose cable.
And of course, you can rule out any non-monitor-related cause by trying a different monitor, if you have one or could borrow one.
Well, the monitor is pretty new, so I certainly hope it's not an electron gun going out already. However, "you get what you pay for." This was a pretty cheap monitor for the size. If the monitor is bad, I think I'll consider going for an LCD monitor, probably 15 or 17 inch. I spend a lot of time programming, and LCD's are better at reducing eye strain.
I went ahead and moved my UPS, and so far, no yellow blinking; but, I'll just have to wait and see if it lasts.
