hi,
the best thing would be to throw away your ADSL usb modem and get some ethernet modem.
usb modems are much harder to install/configure.
here is an article to configure modem using pppoe-setup.

regards

hi thre you can always do this, sorry these web sit's are not american - just as an example!

buy an ethernet rooter with an inbuilt ADSL moden

USB modens dont work well with linux and if you get one working it will never work as well as it did in windows

you will need to make sure that linux sees your ethernet card with is usually fine. The advantage with this is that you can wire up lots of computers and shear the net connection with as many computers as you like with no extra cost to you internet bill and tend to be more stabler than USB modems and the like. make shoure that your rooter has an in built ADSL modem

if you need dail up the a serial modem will do that job rember
that they are all hardware modems with an easy interface that is easy for linux and windows to command

the reasion for these silly USB modems and many if not all PCI cards is that they use computer programs to take a way electronic hardware that cost the consumer letting the computer doing some of the work and tend to be smaller to and cheeper [ some times they may say hardware moden PCI or USB, just egnore them ] often called
winmodems

have a look a round the net and on linuxqueations.org if you dont belive me

here are such models UK web site.

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...ice&show=stock

go hear for serial modems

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...&subcat_uid=37

dont go out and buy PCI USB or laptop cards to be used as modems

I already have a router a netgear dg834.It's really handy it does connect you to internet by it's internal adsl modem ppp connection ,it has its own ip and it gives you an extra potection. It has a switch for several pc but i attached 1 linuxbox firewall gateway , behind it a switch and 3 more servers .Now for a change i wanted to make my linuxgateway experience more "intense" making eth0 linuxbox have my isps' public ip and exposing the linux iptables straight to internet,if i'm not wrong ethernet modems are same as router their WAN interface has a pubblic ip,and lan interface has a IANA address ... I'm not going to change much i'm still willing to get my usb modem wrking with linux ...
