modem does not work

My modem seems not to work.
When i use the Network Configuration utility and try to activate the modem
I get the following error:
./ifup: configuration for ifcfg-ppp0 not found.
Usage: ifup <device name>

This is not a win-modem. This is a good hardware modem.
Please let me know if you have an idea why this is happenig.

Note:
I use a dial-boot system with Red-Hat 9 as well as Windows XP. The modem does not
work under the Windows either. It an error message sais that there is no valid modem installed. However if I go to the control panel and look for my modem it sais that it is
installed.

Thanks you very much
