Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard recognized but not functional... help!

Hi all,
I have a Logitech MK300 keyboard and mouse that are unfortunately non-functional. I know there are quite a few posts like this (I've read quite a few of them), but none of the solutions help me at all. The output of the command "lsusb" is (with the dongle plugged in):

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 008 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 007 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 006 Device 002: ID 046d:c517 Logitech, Inc. LX710 Cordless Desktop Laser
Bus 006 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 17ef:1004 Lenovo
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 0a5c:2145 Broadcom Corp.
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

The output of "ls -lt /dev | head -20" is:

pwmellis@pellis:~$ ls -lt /dev | head -20

I assume this means it is recognized; however, nothing happens when I jiggle the mouse/mash keys on the keyboard. I have even tried the command "sudo cat /dev/input/mice", but nothing happens when I move the wireless mouse (I do get random characters when using the trackpad and ibm nub mouse). I assume this works as one of the reviews on Amazon said that he regularly uses this mouse on Ubuntu (this is one of the reasons I bought the thing). Also, for about 5 seconds of clarity earlier tonight, the mouse did work; unfortunately, it stopped working within a few seconds. I have tried restarting with and without the dongle plugged in, turning the mouse on and off, switching usb ports, pressing the connect buttons on the dongle/mouse/keyboard while muttering incantations, etc. Please help!! Thanks much.

I have exactly the same beastie without any troubles at all on any Ubuntu since 7.10.
Others tend to have fun with the special keys. That's not your problem.

Are the batteries new? (Or are they the batteries which came with the thing? - mine requires pretty fresh batteries or will not respond.
)
Have you tried the things on another computer?

Have a look in dmesg for notices about this.

So my problem gets weirder...

Now the mouse is randomly working (just woke up this morning, plugged it in, held down the connect button and voila!). The keyboard; however, is still not functioning. I looked in "dmesg" and got...

pwmellis@pellis:~$

Any ideas??

[Edit]: for some reason the keyboard just started working... I have no idea why. At this point I'm just curious.

You have not answered the questions in the previous post yet.
Remember: we know that this setup is supported out of the box in Ubuntu.
Lets rule out common problems with the HW before we speculate about other things.
