Logitech Wave 2.4 corless keyboard intermittent problem (USB + Bluetooth)
Hi guys,
I have searched the Internet but I haven't seen any posts for symptoms exactly like mine with the Logitech Wave 2.4 keyboard and mouse. The mouse works flawlessly. It never fails to respond to mouse moves and key presses. The keyboard is frustrating. It goes through periods when it seems to be unresponsive and then suddenly dumps a string of key presses out. Or it wants to repeat characters as if the firmware is not debouncing the key events properly. At the moment, it is working properly but an hour ago it was virtually unusable. It seems to be related to being idle and then waking up. I seem to have the most trouble when I have set it aside for a while and then attempted to resume work.
For instance, I have been searching for a solution on the Internet so I have been using it more or less continuously for an hour and at the moment it is working fine. But before that, I took a 30 minute break for lunch. When I returned, the keyboard was acting flaky again.
I had a Logitech keyboard before that got damaged. I tried replacing it with a Rocketfish keyboard but Vista had persistent problems with it. (Yes, I occasionally have to use Microsoft products, who doesn't.) So I acquired the Logitech Wave 2.4 Mouse and Keyboard to save my sanity. Although Linux handled the Rocketfish devices much better that Windows, it was still not 100%. It was enough to indicate that the underlying problem may not be specific to Logitech but may have something to do with the way USB/Bluetooth keyboards are handled in general.
System Details:
Hardware: Hp DV7Z-1000 laptop + 4GB DRAM + lightscribe dvd + atheros wireless (disabled) + 1600x1050 display
Software: Fedora 10 (I removed as many Bluetooth related options as I could identify that would not stop the mouse and keyboard from operating. This included the bluetooth streaming audio mechanism.)
I also checked the system monitor to check for an application that was causing process starvation but the indicated CPU load was very low (<10%) and the system was still having keyboard problems.
I'm having the same issue. Did you get anywhere? I have a bad feeling this is goign to be an annoying to track down because of how intermittent it is. The way I would describe what I'm seeing is that in seemingly random intervals keyboard presses don't come through where I'm typing (terminal window, browser form field, etc.). Then sometimes it comes back to life and a few of the last keys I entered come through, sometimes all of them, and sometimes none of them.
I see you posted mid-march. I've had mine since Christmas, but I dont' remember this happening for the first while that I had it. I almost thought it might be a battery issue, but fresh batteries didn't make the difference. I wonder if an update to my Ubuntu Gutsy system did it.
Not only is the intermittent behaviour annoying, I don't even know WHERE to begin to get some debug info.
I tried to use an alternate BlueTooth transceiver. It could not see the mouse or keyboard when I tried to register. I also noticed that this keyboard and mouse do not have the usual sync keys that BlueTooth devices have. I located a real BlueTooth keyboard and mouse (Logitech diNovo) and have had no performance problems. (They keyboard is smaller than standard which causes me to make more typing errors.)
I tried to locate linux drivers for the Wave 2.4 but I had no success. What bothers me is how many keyboards are on the market now that say they are wireless but do not have the BlueTooth logo. I do not know if there is a new wireless standard or if every manufacturer is doing something unique. The internet pages I have found say that the wireless adapter will take care of everything and that the keyboard should act as if it were wired to the computer. They say "Don't worry, be happy. Trust us." Well, it doesn't work, does it?
I was using a Rocketfish Bluetooth keyboard and mouse before. It worked most of the time in Linux though once in a while, I had to replug the adapter to reset it. It never did work reliably under Vista. (I know but I have to use MS junk to get bios updates. I have found I can go weeks at a time without an MS fix. Imagine that.)
