Linux support: pci sata card vs integrated sata

I've tried several old and new pci sata controller cards with both linux 2.4.29 and the newest 2.6 kernels, and have never had success (no recognition of hard drive or sata controller).
Does the compatability of sata with linux only apply to the integrated motherboard controllers?
Do you use a sata pci card for your sata drives (and does the card work without recompiling)?

I used a cheap SATA card for a while without any problems, always detected fine. It was based off the Silicon Image 3114 (I think.. similar at least). However bear in mind that you will get much better performance with and onboard controller as the data does not have to go down the PCI bus then.

So when sites say linux has support for an sata controller, does that mean it supports all forms (integrated pci etc), or just integrated?
