Question life span of an optical media

I recently read about recommendations for increasing the life span of optical media as follows:-

1) storage at constant temperature in the range 41F-68F with relative humidity 30%-50%
2) no exposure to direct sunlight
3) marking only with water soluble markers

can any one explain me how water soluble marker becomes a factor in the life span of an optical media ?

interesting thread

1.freezeng won't help with cd media
2.even storage in pitch dark can help
3.using stickers(even those for cd covers) can help, note that any alchohol can make damage to layers where information is stored.
