Exclamation Lenovo T460 on Linux Mint 18.2 - Sierra Wireless ® EM Series EM7455 -- Not reading SIM

Hi there, I have just installed Sierra Wireless EM Series EM7455 in my Lenovo T460 running Linux Mint 18.2.

Looks like the OS reads it and reads the SIM too but when I go to Network Manager and try to set up the connection I go through all the steps and nothing happens.

rickslash,

Welcome to LQ.

This looks like it could get messy judging by the feedback and comments on here:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/7479...roadband-modem

I hope you find the link of use.

The modem must first be activated to work with a certain provider. Usually, the laptop manufacturer will sign you up with whoever it uses. Otherwise, the modem has no idea what system to connect to. Sometimes the process is automated through custom software.

It should be in the instructions for the laptop. All cellular devices must be activated, because someone has to pay for the cellular service. Cellular service is not "just there". Someone has to provide it. And, it costs money.

Certain things, like the Amazon Kindle, are packaged with cellular communication for life included, but that's only because Amazon pays the cost up front to the cellular provider. It's kind of like Internet. You can't just connect. You have to get an ISP. Then, you can get on the Internet.

I have reinstalled a second partition with windows 10 and got the sierra card activated and working. When I log back into Linux it still works.. but when i suspend the system, or if i disable and reanable it, linux goes back to unavailable and the only way to get it working again is logging into windows and than back into linux mint... any idea?

Try using one of these programs to manage the modem: mbimcli (included with libmbim), or ModemManager. And see this link: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-D...4/td-p/3344299

I didn't notice anything about destination folders in that link. The correct driver is included in kernel 4.7 and later. The problem is caused by a firmware delay of 10-20 ms necessary to initialize the modem. You also need ModemManager >= 1.6.

Thank you. I have tried installing Modem Manager 1.68 but I am having a problem with one of the necessary libraries: libmbim 1.4. I have installed 1.2 and installed 1.4 on top together with a bunch of other dependencies that Modemmanager needs. The problem is that this specific one seems not to load even if installation was correct. Any idea?

How do you know it's not loading? Tell us what is going on. Did the library install go OK? What errors are you seeing?

I got all the dependencies requested but libmbim 1.4, when i check it after installation (which I have tried in several ways) I still only see the 1.2 version of the lib, which is not sufficient to install Modemmanager 1.68.

Which error messages are you seeing that lead you to believe you need another library or that the one you need is not installed.
