Laptop Charger broken and replacement option?

My Dell Latitude E7250 is not charging and I think it is the power pack, it no longer lights up, but does not overheat.

I have a spare old Dell charger with the same connector size, so it fits my laptop, but may burn it out. It was made for an old Dell laptop, a bigger one. For use with Adapter PA 10 or PA 12. It is PA 12 family, and my laptop and the charger are output DC 19.5 V, the old laptop is for 4.62 A. The new is for that or 3.34 A. And the charger is for the latter output.

I can ask a computer shop man for help, or is it worth trying the old adapter?

As long as DC is the same, you're fine.

If Amp is lower on old charger, it may get warmer or charge slower, but no problems. Higher possible amp output is not a problem... Could even speed up charging.

Dell power supplies have a memory module that can be read by the laptop so it will tell you if it doesn't like it. As posted being the same voltage is the main criteria with it being able to supply the same or more current.

Try using the old adapter. The voltage is the same, and the Amps rating is fine.

I've had a lot of good luck with getting cheap 3rd party Dell laptop chargers off eBay (not used, but new ... they just sell them new on eBay). We're talking on the order of $10 to $15 each. I haven't looked them up on other places like Amazon or Walmart or whatever, but I expect you can get them other places cheap also.

I don't really look at Amp rating ... my experience is that it doesn't really matter so long as it's in the same ballpark.

Do pay attention to the connector, though. Dell has used more than one laptop charger connector.

It depends on what you define as in the ballpark. I would assume the provided power supply has some "head room" so running at peak current including charging demand even if battery was completely dead does not exceed its rating.

I tried the old power source, it seems both light up the green light when plugged in to the power point, but the green glow goes off when plugged into the laptop. And it won't start up. Maybe it is the power on button, I'll have to take it to the computer repair shop.

Could be the charging circuit or internal voltage converter has a short.

It may be the motherboard is burned out.

The Sandisk 128 GB pen drive gets warm. I had it in the laptop to put an OS onto from a smaller pen drive. As I was doing so, my battery ran out of power. But there was no LED or any response to pressing the start up button while being charged.

I tried a second charger and put in the old battery and still nothing. I suspect my Sandisk USB stick damaged the motherboard, is this right?

I would be surprised if a flask disk damaged the laptop but I have seen strange things happen with electronics.

Hi,

I agree that myriad of things can happen with electronics. As to faulting a system with a USB Flash it would seem unlikely unless the USB fails on the system side of the port. You would need a motherboard schematic to determine the connection state for the port(s). Along with bench full of equipment.

Hope this helps.
