intel 855GM crash

My x-server crashed yesterday - badly.
Tried to run glxgears and everything went black and stayed that way after a reboot and with a different kernel.Glxgears was working fine before and there was no new software installed or anything changed in the configuration.
I did get it back up and running by changing from i810 to vesa as driver for xfree.Did anybody run across a problem like this before and has an idea what could cause it?
I suppose it's either a bug,a feature or faulty hardware.

Do I have to find a fix for everything myself???

Just in case anybody stumbles about the same problem:
This is problem with the ring buffer not being flushed (whatever that might be).XFree 4.3.0 didn't work so well and with XFree 4.3.99 it seems to be fixed.
