Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Installing a (ricoh) media card reader on HP laptop with ubuntu 9.10

I have successfully installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion laptop (dv6130US)
Although I have not checked everything out, I believe the only hardware issue I have (so far) it getting the media card reader to work.

I used the lspci command to determine if the memory card was recognized and got the following response (I've only copied what I believe to be the relative info)
05:05.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Ricoh Co Ltd R5C832 IEEE 1394 Controller
05:05.1 SD Host controller: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter (rev 19)
05:05.2 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C843 MMC Host Controller (rev 0a)
05:05.3 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C592 Memory Stick Bus Host Adapter (rev 05)
05:05.4 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd xD-Picture Card Controller (rev ff)

I then created a directory in /dev called mcr
sudo mkdir /dev/mcr
and created a directory in /media called mcr
sudo mkdir /media/mcr

I then tried to mount the cardreader
sudo mount /dev/mcr /media/mcr
but I got the following error
mount: /dev/mcr is not a block device

I'm new to Ubuntu so I can't figure out what to do next. FYI the memory type I want to read is an Xd card (Olympus camera card).

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

The "mkdir /dev/mcr" was a mistake.

What is the output of dmesg just after inserting the media card?
eg
Code:
dmesg | tail
Another useful bit of information can be provided by lsscsi (you may have to install it first )

To install lsscsi
Code:
sudo apt-get install lsscsi
Then with the card inserted, run:
Code:
lsscsi

Solved - sort of

Evo2,
First of all thanks for responding to my post.
After receiving your response, I reloaded ubuntu 9.10 and started to read more about others with the same or similar issue.
I found one post that indicted that sometimes it's the memory card, so I switched to another card and lo and behold the reader works. However it will not read an Xd card only SDHL and Micro SD cards which are the only other 2 that I had.
At this point I can plug the camera into the laptop via a usb port to get the pictures from the camera's Xd card.
So at this point I'm good to go because I can read and write to the 2 SD media cards by inserting them into the on board laptop reader and as I mentioned above I can get the pix via a USB cable.
Once again thanks for your time.
