Unhappy Hsync vsync VertRefresh... mmm... ok?

So how do I figure out what is the Hsync and VertRefresh to put in my xorg.conf anyway? All the xorg.conf that I could find on the net for my laptop/ATI card have different settings..

It did happen a few times that I got stuck in xorgconfig on multiple computers trying to figure out what is the setting again.

Is there a way to know exactly what is the hsync and VertRefresh settings for a monitor?

RTFM.

Your monitor's manual, that is.

Try the following as root:
Code:
get-edid | parse-edid
This assumes that read-edid is installed on your system, and that your video card/monitor supports EDID..

Have a look at the specs for an LCD monitor of a similar resolution to yours, and plug in whatever refresh rates it uses.

You could have a go with this:
http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl

Put in the resolution, and a vert refresh of 60 (LCDs are usually 60Hz refresh), then hit the calculate button.

I get

Code:
	# EDID version 1 revision 2
Section "Monitor"
	# Block type: 2:0 3:0
	# Block type: 2:0 3:fe
	# Block type: 2:0 3:fe
	Identifier "LPL:0000"
	VendorName "LPL"
	ModelName "LPL:0000"
	# Block type: 2:0 3:0
	# Block type: 2:0 3:fe
	# Block type: 2:0 3:fe
	# DPMS capabilities: Active off:no Suspend:no Standby:no

	Mode "1440x900"	# vfreq 59.939Hz, hfreq 54.665kHz
		DotClock	96.210000
		HTimings	1440 1504 1536 1760
		VTimings	900 903 906 912
		Flags	"-HSync" "-VSync"
	EndMode
	# Block type: 2:0 3:0
	# Block type: 2:0 3:fe
	# Block type: 2:0 3:fe
EndSection
I guess I just stuff this is xorg.conf?

It looks like your monitor doesn't report the HorizSync/VertRefresh ranges...

You can use the Mode section to create a modeline that should work (assuming the values are actually correct), in your case it would be
Code:
# 1440 x 900 Generated from EDID info
Modeline "1440x900" 96.21 1440 1504 1536 1760 900 903 906 912 -HSync -VSync
added to the end of your "Monitor" section.
