I just wanted to inquire, has anyone got a HP 8000, that is running a copy of Linux? They aren't the best for memory use, since they are quite small systems.
I had used an old copy of lite on XP, but I gave up on trying to get it going again with it on both systems. But since windows 7 only has so long for support, I had partition a drive on a optiplex 780 desktop for eventual install of linux lite the latest version. I have 5GB RAM on that.
I had typed this on optiplex GX270 windows xp system. Still rocking away with a few burnt out capacitors, and a seventeen year old hard drive. It is second hand, so I don't much about the long term use of it, you know more than ten years ago or what ever.

What does "small" have to do with anything? What do you mean by "best for memory"?

TPM can be a difficult obstacle on PCs that age. I've never tried on an HP 8000, but unless TPM on the HP is too problematic, you should be able to install on the 780, then move the disk to the HP. They both use the same chipset, and might also use the exact same CPU. If you cannot get the HP to accept Linux now, it might be persuaded by a BIOS update.

This is an indication of reduced performance. Q45 motherboards have Dual Channel memory architecture. RAM needs to be installed in matched pairs in paired slots to maximize performance. Not doing so can cost nearly 50% of RAM performance.

I had to replace the power supply in one of my 270s night before last, the one I first got, and had to replace motherboard caps on 6 or 8 years ago to make it POST. The 270 is among the last made with AGP slots. This particular one does not much care for the FX5200 currently in it. It won't run a 1920x1200 display at more than 1680x1050.
The HP is too small, it runs a laptop drive, it has 4GB and windows 7 uses it up along with firefox easily on youtube.
As for the XP system, they worked the first time, but because I remove the partition, it caused it not to display at the beginning when switching the system on. So it was XP by default.
But yes, the 30GB side on the 780 should be fine for a lite copy. I don't have a windows 7 installation disc, so there shouldn't be too much of a problem with removing the lite copy if needed. It wouldn't end up like with the old 32bit xp rubbish that happened.
270s can't be fitted with a 64 bit CPU or more than 2GB RAM. I still have 3 working 270s.
760 & 780 connected to certain displays don't like to light them up during POST unless the display is powered up before the PC gets connected to a power source. This results in a Grub menu never showing up. I had a fruitless go round with Dell support over a brand new Dell display about this, but later found out it happens with an Acer and an NEC just the same, so obviously rooted in the Optiplex firmware.
I never planned to use the 270, just explaining I had lite on that, and on the Dimension 4600, how ever that one wasn't really quick enough for it. Slow Pentium 4 chip on that.
This is what I have on the system I am typing now, the 780 can had a partition for lite, so I don't have to bother with installing it eventually later on. The system currently has a dodgey power supply, so i have bought another on Ebay, I decided to stick with this, this was a replace for a small form factor 780, just removed the drives from it back in late july 2017 when I got this current model of a optiplex.
Interesting you have three of those old systems. They run lite I guess?
I guess it must be very particular. Well, I guess load a copy of lite in a storage disk, and using a installer to do this, and go through the setup menu via F12 or something, and should be able to install fine on that small amount I reserved for it, no problems with removing it. I hope so.
