How to scan?

How do I scan? For example, I've got my scanner plugged in and YAST says that it's working after I pressed 'test' but how would I initiate a scan? Am I supposed to use the shell? If so, what command? And no, the 'Scan' button doesn't work on my scanner. It's a BearPaw1200TA under SUSE9.3.

EDIT: I just used the command 'scanimage' and it scanned my document, but how would I view it? And how would I change scan settings?

there are several options. From the command line you could type 'xsane' or you could use 'kooka' as a gui frontend. You could also import directly into the gimp... and there are sure to be many more options available.

I'm not there yet though. I discovered xsane works with my parallel scanner, but I'm having trouble making it work as a normal user. (parport permission I think it might be. If you have any ideas my problem is in this thread .
