How to install new hardware

Well, i'm pretty new to to Linux and don't understand how to do a very simple thing. To install my ubs Step Motor Controller.
Here is a full story. I've custom made Step Motor Controller with usb interface. I've created UI in Labview (it's a programming language from National Instruments) and using VISA drivers (from the same NI). I've created the .inf file that can be used as a driver for windowz. Now i'm trying to test everything under linux enviroment. Best part of labview is that source code is platform independent (well it almost is). So i've recompiled my software under linux and it's now working. But the problem is with installing a hardware.
When i open Harddrake 2 i can see my controller under "Other" (not recognized) devices. But there is no button that will offer to install some sort of driver for that device. I can't understand why? There should be one. So the question is: what actions should i take to install hardware?
i have also two slightly offtopic questions

1) what is the equal command for csh's setenv in mandrivia?
(i need equvivalent for setenv VXIPNPPATH /usr/local/vxipnp
setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/local/vxipnp/linux/bin)

2) how to change current directory while in console mode (equvivalent of cd in DOS)?

I'm using mandrivia 10.0, KDE 3.2, harddrake 2.0. System is Inspiron 6000.

Thank you in advance.

I assume the inf file you are talking about is a Windows driver? And not a driver that your program loads to communicate with the device?

If so, then that means you would have to write a Linux kernel module (driver) for the device if you wanted to use it under Linux.

It might (this is pushing it) be possible to use the Windows driver under Linux with ndiswrapper. Even though ndiswrapper is designed for WiFi network cards, it has been used on some generic USB devices, so it is possible it could work here.

Actually i hope that the problem with the drivers would resolve itself, because NI claims that their language is OS independent so i hope that i'll be able either use the windowz.inf file or create it with NI software.
But the problem remains how should i explain linux where (from what directory) to take that driver? or i should somehow install it explicitly? So question remains where is that button? (see original post)
