Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

How to check the filesystem of a crashed server in Rescue System Mode

Hiall,

I have a Suse 9.3 Professional server, that does not start beyond Initializing Hardware. I try to figure out what happens using the Rescue System option when booting from the 1st Linux cd.

Now I want to mount the original file system, but I do not know what is in the fstab file, and since I can't do fdisk -l or access the fstab file, how can I find out what was the original setup?

When I check 2 other 9.3 professional servers in my office, I see 2 different setups:

The first shows:
servername1#user@/etc>more fstab
/dev/sda2 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1

while the second shows

servername2#user@/etc>more fstab
/dev/hda2 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1

So, in Rescue System Mode at the crashed server, I logged in as root, I tried to mount either one in the /mnt directory, with

mount /dev/sda2 /mnt

Using the first, with sda2, the server crashes, literally, it reboots and when I tried again, it just hangs, and I have to reboot using the switch.

When I use the second, with hda2, Suse states
mount: block device /dev/hda2 is write-protected, mouning read-only
mount: /dev/hda2 is not a valid block device

Could this mean that the sda2 is the correct one, but the hdd crashed? Or is the hda2 the correct one, and is the filesystem corrupted? In that case, can I use reiserfsck to repair the reiserfs?

Or, my filesystem is not in sda2 or hda2 but in some other name, how can I find that out?? How can I check that configuration in a crashed server?

Be gentle, I am a newby

Thanks and greetz, Theo

"fdisk -l" will tell you the disks that are connected - and the partitions.
