telnet access - might be ur fiirewall. try this as root:

iptables -F

or

ipchains -F

or

lokkit

(and set your rules to allow incoming telnet connection).

for a network browser, try xsmbrowser. search for it in www.google.com/linux . get the rpm file and install it via 'rpm -ivh xmsbrowser*.rpm'.

u can then run it within in your GUI from a terminal (xmsbrowser &)

before that, can u access ur win98 system from your XP/2k systems?

I use smbclient (ftp like client to access windows shares). GUI programs like Konqueror, Nautilus, or similar file manager programs can access windows shares but I always have problems accessing through those. samba.org has some GUI programs like Network Neighborhood listed on their site. IMO, command line tools from SAMBA are the best.

You can read instructions on how to mount your windows shares from justlinux.com . Then you can access the files anytime you want to. LINUX does not refresh the contents of your mounted windows shares. If you restart or shutdown your windows computer LINUX will still have it mounted.

If you can access shares from your W2k and NT PC on your linux box and can ping the W98 box then check file sharing on the win 98 PC.

LinNeighborhood or gnomba are equiv to network neighborhood for windows.

Have you verified that telnet is running? Can you open a telnet session on the linux PC?

I agree with the other posts turn the firewall off and the recheck to see if you can telnet to your linux PC.
