Also, try setting your default sink to alsa. I thought I mentioned that earlier, but apparently I missed it.

I haven't been able to find anything more; if all else fails, you could ask the mods to move this to the Ubuntu forum.

If anyone is still there I think I found the problem. alsamixer is reading my modems sound conf i think. how do i get it on the sound system.

Run it again with "-vv" (very verbose) instead of "-v" (verbose).

Tough call, as conexant makes more than just modems. Lspci wasn't much help, was it?

Lessee...

How about the contents of /proc/asound?

cat /proc/asound/version will tell you what version of alsa you're using.

cat /proc/asound/cards will tell you about your card.

This is a tough nut to crack, isn't it?
