I recently purchased a brand new Hynix RAM DDR333 256 MB as an upgrade to my system.
I was told by the vendor to take out my old RAM stick, a Samsung DDR266 128 MB so that i avoid some issues.
Plz advise me on whether i can mix-and-match these old-new combination. The RAM sticks don't match each other in any specs as far as i hav seen
266Mhz vs 333Mhz [anyway my system is going to run at 266MHz becoz the CPU is a P4 1.6 GHz allowing memory to run at only 266Mhz]
The new RAM is a CL 2 rated whereas the old one is CL2.5
The number of components too dont match............
Inspite of these can i run the 2 sticks together and wat might be the possible issues.
Personally I would not mix memory sticks that are so different. You may experience program crashes and other odd behaviour on your system. You can try using the two sticks, maybe your system will run fine.
Thanx reddazz
I just decided to seat the RAM and run Memtest86.At about an hour and 5mins later it shows no errors.Maybe Memtest is not a reliable tool......but i hav decided to run the system with 2 sticks and watch wat happens.......
Your PC will probably just run the DDR333 ram and 266MHz speed, which it should do with no trouble. you shouldn't have any problems as long as you don't run the DDR266 at 333MHz
It's not as though I know much; but unless there's a real possibility that using the disparate sticks might somehow damage the computer, why don't you just try it? If programs crash, you could just shut down, remove the older of the disparate sticks, reboot, and start the programs over.
