getting my modem to function


i have a motorola surfboard mod #sb4100 and im trying to set up my 1st linux sys. problem is i dont know how to get the modem to work in linux. can someone help? and if i need to reg any kernels here im gonna need very specific directions, im still a newbie

yes it does support unix systems

how are you connecting to your pc ?? ethernet or usb from the cable modem will help us help you ??

not sure if there are specific drivers for your modem, definitely prompt you to read up on usb support in linux, try www.linuxdoc.org for some howto's...
also another good resource is at www.linux-usb.org

found this link claiming support for the cable modem is in kernel 2.4.6 and later.. http://www.computing.net/linux/wwwboard/forum/7161.html

might be able to update your kernel if your using a older version and have support built in.

ok but like i said im a TRUE newbie.treat me like i have a severe brain dysfunction..i dont know how to apply kernels and stuff like that yet. i also have no clue of how to config this for getting online
