I can confirm that nouveau fixes the 'fallen off the bus' / WAIT issue. The issue is caused by the nvidia drivers.

Not getting lucky here. I have tried running it with sudo, upgrading LWJGL to the latest version (also a nightly build) but getting no results. I can't play in the browser either (white screen).

Not sure what to do next. I'll keep googling, I guess.

Have you monitored GPU temps?

I still think it's hardware. Don't get so busy trying to figure it out that you let your warranty expire. You can't complain about it not working in Linux, but you sure can about it not working in Windows. I personally would rather find a fix than send it in, but just don't wait too late. And of course, if you do send it in, don't send in your hard drive.

Another idea, if you have an extra hard drive, install Windows 8(it's free), and see how a bare windows 8 will work.

When I exit minecraft I get:

Code:
xception in thread "Minecraft main thread" org.lwjgl.LWJGLException: X Error - disp: 0x40cded30 serial: 59619 error: GLXBadWindow request_code: 153 minor_code: 32

	at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
But, it's not a big deal, because I just close the window.

I'm using kernel 3.2.7, and the nouveau and Xorg that comes with slackware64 13.37. Maybe the kernel makes a difference ? I don't get any errors when I play.

Just the final update.

It was a hardware issue. Last month it started occurring again with an increased frequency so that the laptop was virtually unusable both on Slackware and Windows. I phoned Lenovo support they asked me to post it to their repair centre. I must say the customer service was really good. I sent it without my HD. They sent it back within 5 working days with a letter that a CPU and a fan were replaced and that the laptop has passed all their tests. You can imagine my anger when I inserted my HD, booted it and straight away experienced display freezes exactly like it was before. I phoned them and this time they sent a courier to pick up the laptop. The laptop was back with me after 3 days! This time the whole motherboard was replaced and it WORKS!!!!

Apart from the fact that it's in working condition, I have got a practically brand new laptop

Thanks everyone for the input in this thread.

I wish there was a way to diagnose hardware issues like this one, but I don't really know of any tests that can be done to diagnose a bad mobo. I guess taking it to a shop is the only way to find out.

When it's intermittent, it can be difficult sometimes to tell if it is a hardware issue, but when it can be repeated, the best way to tell if it's a hardware issue is to use a different operating system.

Typically if it fails on Microsoft Windows, and on Linux, it's likely a hardware issue.

Yeah, I guess that may be the only way to know for sure. You know, maybe I'll try BSD instead of Window$, surely that is different enough.
