my roommate wants to try linux on his computer, everything works fine except his kensington usb wheel mouse..
the mouse works fine about for 30secs, and it dies..
i noticed that /dev/usbmouse file gets deleted
i have intelli usb-wheel mouse myself, so i copied x....-4 pointer section and created all symlink and stuff..(with ls -l, all related files look exactly same as mine) and his comp has all the necessary usb modules..
what's wrong?
oh.. another similar one is,
when i run linuxconf, it says "need to fix /dev/lp0 owner to root.lp from lp.lp"
and it changes the owenership.
however after reboot, the permission goes back to lp.lp.....
i just thought these two problems similar to each other..
(machine does something without my command)
what is wrong...extremely easy question to answer...it's USB!
but I'm sure you can get a 5 dollar serial or PS/2 mouse that would instantly work in Linux with absolutely no problems...
But anyway...since all people are falling into the trap of buying usb...
check your kernel to see if all the HID options have been selected...also check all the USB support is also selected...after this the mouse should work...but like you see setting anything which is USB is a pain in the butt. So my true recommendation is don't get anything USB,

Is it Mandrake 8.2? If so you can get your usbmouse work by adding
following line to /etc/modules.conf
alias mouse usbmouse
Save the file and reboot the system using the "reboot" command
as root. (Mandrake Linux 8.2 Errata page).
