Copy a compiled a module/driver for USB wifi router to another distro

Hi

Recently I bought a Usb wifi router Belkin F6D4050 as my old laptop does not have a wifi chip.
Unfortunately Belkin does not give Linux drivers for their products.
I searched around the web and found a solution where after downloading the ralink drivers and making some modifications it worked under ubuntu

As my laptop is a PIII I decided to install Arch core image and build on it.
I followed the same instructions in compiling the drivers for the usb router and yes it worked under arch linux.

It generated a .ko file and it loads at boot time.

Now say I want to use Puppy/Ubuntu etc instead of Arch and I want to access wifi through the router.

My question is whether copying this .ko file specific to the device to another distro puppy/ubuntu in the similar path make it work or it needs to be recompiled on the new distro

Thanks
Ninad

I'm not sure as I've never tried this myself, however I doubt it will work if the following things are different between the distros:

- Kernel version
- Kernel configuration
- GCC version (?)

How about actually trying it and posting results?

Copying the .ko file will not work for the reasons easuter listed above.

Recompile it, you know how to by now.

Hi

Reviving this thread

Actually instead of the module can it be compiled into the kernel

For e.g.
I download the lates Archlinux iso update it with pacman and then recompile the kernel but with the wireless driver included

This can be for any other distro as well

Thanks
Ninad
