Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Converting HDMI computer output to VGA monitor input

So here's the deal: I have a small 'nettop' computer that only has a HDMI output. The only monitors I have only have VGA input.

Is there a way to use a HDMI-to-VGA or HDMI-to-DVI + DVI-to-VGA connection setup to hookup this computer to my monitor?

Let me make it clear that I am not looking for a high-quality, high-definition display. This is going to be hooked up to a monitor only until I have the system up and running and then it'll be a ssh-only headless server.

I'm only concerned that if I buy these connectors that I won't get a blank screen.

I think HDMI to VGA can only be done with a converter.
I have seen some HDMI to VGA cables but I guess this only works with some specific devices.

I don't see why this wouldn't work, as long as the signal doesn't have any HDCP content. Your hardware will be the factor of how well the signal looks.

You will need an HDMI to VGA converter, which depending on make and quality can range from 30 -140 USD.

You won't be able to rig something by going HDMI > DVI > VGA. I did wonder this myself as a way of connecting a beagleboard to a VGA monitor but the problem is the HDMI only carries "digital" where as DVI can carry digital and analogue or just digital depending on which pins are wired in. Also where the digital is concerned it can be wired to have two differing levels of digital signal "single" and "dual."
