Brother MFC-L2700DW, I can't change the printer configuration

I recently bought a Brother MFC-L2700DW all in one printer. I downloaded the Linux driver from Brother and installed it per the instructions. It seems to have worked and I can print and scan with it. But when I try and change the configuration so that it prints on both sides of the page (Duplex) it only works for one print job and then reverts to the no duplex setting. I assume there is a script file somewhere that has the settings and it requires root privileges to write to and that's why it won't take the changes.

Oh yeah, I'm running Kubuntu 16.04.2 and trying to change the configuration through the "system settings - printers" screen in KDE.

Desktop print settings don't stick unfortunately. They just get passed as print options for the current job.

Have you tried setting the default print options via CUPS web interface?

http://localhost:631/printers

Select the printer > Administration > Set Default Options

You may also need to restart CUPS after the changes are made.

If you are ok with CLI commands then the same can be done using 'lpoptions'. For more info
Code:
man lpoptions
