Rep:
ATI New Drivers = No working
Oh great!
ATI came out with new drivers yesterday (10/8/2003) and I downloaded it.
This is what I tried to do to install it:
1) logged on as root
2) typed rpm -U <filename>.rpm (I thought I just needed to upgrade my old drivers). It didn't work
3) type rpm -i --force <filename>.rpm (that's what I did last time and it worked). It didn't work here
This is the error I got:
*** Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.
*** WARNING ***
Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system.
You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir
and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module.
Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh'
in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository.
(see readme.txt for more details.)
As of now you can still run your XServer in 2D, but hardware acclerated
OpenGL will not work and 2D graphics will lack performance.
failed.

ATI display drivers successfully installed
please run 'fglrxconfig' now
The funny thing was that on the old driver, I installed my kernel source from the Mandrake Control Center and I got it to install fine. Now that I got these new drivers, it's as if my kernel sources don't exist anymore! What happened???
I just d/l the new drivers too. I ran them and I have the KT400 problem but I ran threw the same fix I did before but this time it diodn't work. Now I have the new drivers but no 3d accel. WHY ME. Any ideas what to do short of getting a new kernel?
I have the exact problem with SuSE 9 (2.4.20-99). It's like it can't find the kernel sources. I tried to change the make.sh file to point to the right headers, but no luck.
