ATI New Drivers = No working

Oh great!

ATI came out with new drivers yesterday (10/8/2003) and I downloaded it.

This is what I tried to do to install it:

1) logged on as root
2) typed rpm -U <filename>.rpm (I thought I just needed to upgrade my old drivers). It didn't work
3) type rpm -i --force <filename>.rpm (that's what I did last time and it worked). It didn't work here

This is the error I got:

*** Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.
*** WARNING ***
Tailored kernel module for fglrx not present in your system.
You must go to /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdir
and execute './make.sh' to build a fully customed kernel module.
Afterwards go to /lib/modules/fglrx and run './make_install.sh'
in order to install the module into your kernel's module repository.
(see readme.txt for more details.)

As of now you can still run your XServer in 2D, but hardware acclerated
OpenGL will not work and 2D graphics will lack performance.

failed.
*** Error: no kernel module build environment - please consult readme.
Installed: qt3 (gcc 3.2) based control panel application
===
ATI display drivers successfully installed
please run 'fglrxconfig' now

The funny thing was that on the old driver, I installed my kernel source from the Mandrake Control Center and I got it to install fine. Now that I got these new drivers, it's as if my kernel sources don't exist anymore! What happened???

Well I fixed my problem. Don't know if this was safe to do or not.

1) updated my kernel to a higher number via the mandrake control center

2) checked in console my current kernel version (it still showed the old version!)

3) uninstalled the higher number kernel version

4) after uninstalled the higher number kernel version, I was given the option to install the kernel-source for my current kernel

5) problem solved.

I just figured out what I did wrong and fixed my problem. It works now. See if my games play better with this driver.

You should post how you fixed your problem. Maybe some guy has the same problem, too!

Instead of via_KT400_setup I should have put via_kt400_setup in my agpgart.be.c file. After that I recompiled it and it runs perfect again.

Me too....

I have the exact problem with SuSE 9 (2.4.20-99). It's like it can't find the kernel sources. I tried to change the make.sh file to point to the right headers, but no luck.
