Unhappy ATI Mobility X300 drivers - me no finding!

I'm running the latest edition of Ubuntu (current to Feb 19th, 2006) on a Dell Inspiron 9300 with the Mobility X300 128mb video card. Although the graphics performance isn't horrible, I'm sure that the card isn't being used or used to its full extent. I'm a linux newbie so I can't tell access the information to see if perhaps the system thinks that the card is some other brand or what, but I was wondering if someone could point me to a driver and some instructions on how to install it.

ATI doesn't really give any information that I can understand and Dell "does not support Linux as a suitable operating system for our laptops" - what a bunch of crap.

Help is much appreciated, thank you!

Hi,

See what the command "glxinfo" says.
If it says "Direct Rendering NO" then you'll need to use the correct ATI drivers.

you can get them from here:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...e&folderID=300

But i would also see if the fglrx driver can be found in Ubuntus repositories.
(do a search for "fglrx" in Apt-get,Synaptic or Aptitude)

NOTE: The ATI installer suggests running the command "fglrxconfig" once the drivers are installed, Be careful doing this as it rewrites your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
I find it safer just to change the driver line(in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) to "fglrx" eg:

Code:
Section "Device"
  Identifier "ATI"
Driver "fglrx" # this is the important bit
EndSection
EDIT: also try "glxgears" and see what fps you get.
with your setup you should get 2000fps(or more).
