Thanks.

Also, for reference, I used this guide to install the drivers: wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation_Guide

Looks to me like you do have a mess. I don't think the drm module is supposed to be loading when you are using fglrx, It looks like you there may be a conflict with an older version. I don't really understand Ubuntu, but if it was Debian, I'd say run:

updatedb
locate fglrx
Remove all the fglrx files you find
remove xorg, xserver-xorg
reinstall xserver-xorg, xorg
Then ... carefully follow your howto page. Make sure you're in single-user mode when you do the modprobe.

Thats pretty much what the beginning of the HOWTO says to do, remove old fglrx, xorg, and xorg-server files, then do a clean install. I've tried it but I always get the same error, and this has happened on multiple distros.

I have this same problem with my Gentoo installation, with Connect3D Radeon X1600 PCI-E 256MB. I would also be very appreciated if someone have the solution ^^

I have the Sapphire Radeon x1600 pro PCI-E 512mb and have been experiencing the same problem. I discovered that this is not so much an issue due to the video card but rather to the configuration of the screen in /etc/xorg.conf Strangely, it happens remarkably often with x1600 cards, so it might be a driver issue as well. The problem occurs most often with wide-screen lcd screens, but it might occur on other flatpanels and probably even crt's as well. On SuSE 10.2 x86_64 with ati-8.32.5-1 drivers it could be fixed with the following command after building the kernel module:

sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx -V 0:1440×900@60 -b /usr/share/doc/packages/fglrx/sax2-profile

On other distributions than SuSE I would suggest manually altering the screens section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. It should contain the native resolution of the screen. See my xorg.conf below:

Notice my native lcd resolution of 1440x900 reported for every color depth in the screens section. It should be possible to use parts from my xorg.conf file on other distributions, since xorg.conf is a rather universal file, even though this one was generated by a suse tool.

Specific note on SuSE, when the sax2 command spits out errors and does not boot X, remove the -b switch from the command.

Hope this helps a little...

Hey i am running kubuntu edgy right now and i have had a similiar issue. I have had this issue trying to install every distro i have attempted on my desktop(i have never had so many problems with a card). In windows only catalyst 6.4 would work. Is it a version problem like windows? Do i have a modeline problem? Is this card simply a lemon? Come on guys some one has to have this card working somewhere. Is their any other solution than simply buying a new card.
i will be happy to get my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log if any has any further ideas and is willing to try to help me. Thanks in advanced. Any input is much appreciated.

Ps. i think the suse guy has a different more compatible card my model number 3049 I have tried two different monitors a LG lcd flatrotn L1720p and a Gateway crt EV700 neither work.

It wouldn't let me post Xorg.0.log because it is greater than 250000 charecters, but i would imagine mine is similar to the ones above. I can email the sucker if necasarry until then this is my xorg.conf.
Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Hello people.

My old Radeon X1600 worked with 8.24 -version drivers (dont remember the last number of the driver.)

However, my Radeon had a manufacturing error. (Green dots on games, picture didn't always come to screen...)

Now I got a new one, a Radeon X1600 Pro 512MB when I sent the old one to the shop.
The newest drivers work, but they give artifacts on OpenGL. But now I'm using the ATI driver version that Gentoo provides.

I'll post my xorg.conf tomorrow, if it helps anything.

I removed the LOADS of comments to make the post shorter. (My xorg.conf is actually made with xorgconfig + aticonfig) This should be a basic file which should work. If you use it change the needed things from the file. I wonder has anyone asked about this problem from ATI?

I am using Edgy, but 8.24 installer won't configure for edgy, is it ok to confifgure the installer for dapper. Also is their a repository with old fglxr packages that i could apt-get instead.

I dont know about Edgy's driver version but Dapper had the version 8.24 drivers.
You can try installing the dapper's package... Not sure will it work though.
You can find the package here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/mi...g-driver-fglrx

then (try to) install with:
Code:
sudo dpkg -i xorg-driver-fglrx_7.0.0-8.25.18+2.6.15.12-1_i386.deb
EDIT: Can you post the error that 8.24 installer gives?

I'm getting the same error using Slackware 11 kernel 2.6.19. I had it working using the default kernel 2.4.33. That was about 20 reloads ago (and several different 2.6.x kernels). My xorg.conf is the same settings for both kernels. Any suggestions - a reload not being one of them

Here are a couple of suggestions for anyone struggling with ATI 1600:

make sure your xorg.file has a section at the bottom which looks like this:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "disable"
EndSection

ATI does not support composite; leaving out this extra section will result in the card running without Direct Rendering.

Another suggestion: if you have a vga=XXX argument on your bootline, you may want to consider removing it. On a number of distros - Suse comes to mind in the first place - this argument will result in a PreInitsomething error.

Put a "Load GLcore" under section Modules.

Here is a rudimentary but fully functional xorg.conf for ATI 1600 (confirmed to work on Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Suse and Mandriva so far); I have an even more detailed one that I can post if there is any interest - just let me know. Please note that this is for a 19 inch LCD so some adjustments may be required to fit other hardware combinations. You may also want to add a fonts section; I removed mine because none of my distros appears to find any of the paths suggested by xorg.conf anyway.
