ATI 9600se running slower than older ATI card w/ DRI on

I recently retired my old 8500le with a new 9600se, unfortunately with DRI on I'm only
getting 950fps on average with glxgears. The old ATI card would avg. 1400 using
glxgears. I've tried running the built in agpgart module, switching back to the 3.7.6 driver,
and nothing will increase my fps. I understand that glxgears isn't an accurate measure of
fps, but running enemy-territory(960x720 windowed, low details, etc )
I average 30-40fps with the new card. So there's no real diffrence in performance, and
subjectively it feels a little sluggish...

My system is as follows: ECS K7VTA3(current bios, AGP x4 128M apature)
Athlon XP 1800+
640M of ram
ATI Radeon 9600se 128M ram
Adapetc 2940UW SCSI card
30gig UW IBM SCSI drive
30gig WD IDE drive
generic DVD-ROM
Sound Blaster Live value(not used since switching to the 2.6 kernel)

Would disabling onboard sound, and ethernet help the situation? I've got a few spare ethernet
cards lying around, and I can probably get the SB card to run with ALSA. Other than that
I'm completely at a loss...

Any help or advice you guys can provide would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
