27-30" monitors - what to choose?

I own a 15.6" laptop (with a mini-HDMI slot) for my job - and now my customer insists on switching to a bigger display. I don't have any experience with external monitors. My sis tells me I need to stick to the IPS matrix. And that's all I know. My customer proposes I choose 28-30" (I think 27" will fit well too). I'd appreciate any advice. Price is not an issue (in reasonable measures) - the customer pays.

I use 'brightnessctl' and 'xgamma' for my laptop screen to set different brightness and gamma levels - a few combinations set to shortcuts. Is that or something similar possible for an external monitor?

27-30" monitors - what to choose?

I use a Dell u27 via HDMI with KDE5. It works without needing to do anything special. The display settings dialog in KDE5 works well, and can be used to get whatever result you want... eg: external screen left or right, which one becomes "main," etc. I'd think most HDMI screens would work the same way.

I find my 26" monitors quite adequate.

As for brightness, etc., all the monitors I have used have built-in hardware controls that work quite nicely.

Displays in the 25"-32" size range come in various native resolutions, most commonly:
  • 1920x1080 FHD HDTV, 1080p, 16:9 Width/Height ratio
  • 2560x1080 64:27 (roughly 21:9)
  • 2560x1440 2k, 16:9, 1440p
  • 2560x1600 2k+, 16:10; mostly only in 30" size
  • 3840x2160 16:9, 4k
4k is the highest quality, typically called HiDPI, because it's the highest pixel density in sizes commonly available in the resolution, which in some environments can be difficult to configure so that default tiny text and icons and windows are enlarged so they don't cause eyestrain, or backache induced by constantly leaning forward.

The gist of this is that a bigger display can either make objects larger, or fit more objects of the same size, or a mixture of both. Make sure your guy makes clear what it is he expects from that that larger size screen, so that an optimal native resolution can be chosen.

on my dell u27 (2560x1440) the letters are too small (for me) - compared to the same laptop on an u24 (1920x1080). Interesting idea to buy a 21:9 display, you need to know if you want to try it. Someone likes it very much.
Brightness, gamma and other settings can be adjusted with some commands and shortcut, yes.
