[ubuntu] Audio did work, but not anymore (AC"97)

When i booted my ubuntu box yesterday and i wanted to listen some music, i got an error with xmms:
(This is translated from dutch, so in english itīs probably different)
Screentitle
Code:
Couldn't open audio
Message
Code:
Please check if:
Your soundcard is configured correct
You have chosen the right output plugin
No other program blocks the soundcard.
But the sound always worked and xmms too.

The soundchip on my asus p4vp-mx still works cause when i go to select multimedia systems, and i test the upper driver thingy with oss driver, i hear a beep, with the bottom one, i hear nothing.

When i go to volume managment it says it couldn't find any hardware, and when i go to system>>preferences>>sound it doesn't detect any soundcards, a the default soundcard dropdown box....

Weird thing is, that just worked before, and the only thing i can think of i did was trying to install vmware, which needed an older version of gcc installed.

Can anyone help me?

ThnQ alot

I have the exact same issue, i'm running ubuntu via vmware on winxp, installed xmms fine and was playing mp3's off it for at least 30 minutes, then out of the blue it just gave me that same error message.

I've also tried removing xmms entirely, and creating a new user account (new home dir) and reinstalled it and tried again, still no good.

Funny thing is, sound on everything else in Ubuntu works fine.... it's just xmms

Any help on this would be extremely helpful.

Looks like this is an issue with gstreamer and not XMMS, if I play media on my local machine, XMMS will play it fine, just not via smb:// links (ie; WinXP).

tijdbom, check to see that you still have permissions to access your sound device, should be located under /dev/ somewhere.

I'm running ubuntu on vmplayer on WinXP, my sound device appears to be /dev/dsp, but I could be wrong about that.
I've also ensured that I've been added to the group "audio" in /etc/groups.
