xwindows trouble -no /dev/mouse /dev/input/mice

startx will not start because, it reports, it cannot find the /dev/mouse (or /dev/input/mice if that is what is in my xorg.conf)

In fact, there is no /dev/mouse or /dev/input/mice. I don't know what to do here, isn't my linux distribution (arch linux) responsible for including this directory upon installation?

Is there a /dev/psaux (which is sometimes used instead of /dev/mouse)? Can you check with dmesg that the mouse was detected correctly on boot.
