synaptic - from there, vlc, liferea, iftop, usually wait until I need an application before I install anything that doesn't come with the distro

I always head for PyCharm (CE), then Bless (Hex Editor), Octave, Meld, GitExt, Gimp and lately Slack. For text editor, usually go for SciTE and Emacs (mostly out of habit).
