View Poll Results: What was your first Linux kernel version?
Slack in like 1995, so I'm assuming it was 1.x - but I really don't remember. I'd lots of prior Unix experience, most specifically with Solaris (or, later, SunOS - if memory serves). As for the holes in my memory, I blame weed.
It must have been in 1995 so 1.2.? I had actually put up Minix on a system and then moved to Linux. Oh the wonders of building the kernel before loadable modules!
I think my first was Red hat something almost 30 yrs. ago. Sadly I stopped using it and went back to Winblows. Now I'm back and ready to learn more. A special thanks to all the Linux gurus who have helped so many!
Slackware with kernel 0.99pl54, back in the days when your first task upon installation was to build a kernel specific to your hardware (no such thing as loadable modules back then). I really don't miss those days at all.

odyrmar; my first linux is a satux 1.7 too old, but have inside my notebook "win" "C.52", ut i dont use it, i use windows 98. Now i have a ultra thing 1745 i7 and now i use linux 17,2.
I started with Linux around 1995/1996 with ~1.2 and I have been using it ever since. I began writing software for Linux back in 1999 with Kylix, and now use Java/JS and Python mostly. It's been a lot of fun and quite lucrative.
First Linux experience was with 0.99pl[12/13/14], distro was LST (Linux Support Team, Erlangen, cool team)
All copied at the university on bloody expensive that time 3.5 inch floppy disks, 1.44m. Not sure, how many, 30-50. Only a 2400baud modem that time, also expensive costs for internet connection.
All running on a 486DX2/66, 32MB. Triple boot, Win 3.1, MINIX (1.5 afair), and Linux.
Don't remember:
AIX and HPUX in the 1990's, Fedora 1 (2003) for personal home use.
first personal machines - IBM 650 with a RAMAC, S-100 Cromemco with a Dazzler
first professional machines - Burrows 5500, Univac 1107 & 1108, IBM 360/67 (VM CP/67)
