webserver can't see itself

hello,

i've recently transfered an old webserver to a new one and while the rest of the world can get to my pages, the new webserver can't!

ok, what i mean is if i VNC to the box, and in a browser type in http://localhost, the website comes up. if i type in http://www.sitenameexample.com, i get a connection refused..

i disabled the firewall temporarily and it didn't help, any idea what's going on there?

thanks,

Can it resolve the domain name? What happens if you type in the public IP address, does it render the site? Sounds to be more like a DNS issue but with connection refused, sounds like a funky firewall issue that I'd double check.

The other end users might still be caching the old one on the old server if it's still up as well.

You might also check the the /etc/resolv.conf file has a valid dns server listed in it, and be sure that the server can get to it.

Hi guys - thanks for the replies,

i am able to render the new website by IP address from the rest of the world, but not from the webserver itself! i can ping other servers, like yahoo.com, by name, so the dns nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf are being checked.

/etc/resolv.conf:
search mysite.com
nameserver x.x.x.x
nameserver x.x.x.xy

but what's very strange if I do an nslookup on mysite.com i get a different IP than an nslookup on www.mysite.com.

@trickykid - i know people are still hitting the old websever because i'm watching the traffic, but it's becoming less & less as more DNS servers are pointing them to the new site (we're updating both temporarily)

i just had a thought... maybe i configured apache wrong? i can ping the new server's address from itself, but not display the webpage. i can also enter it's network IP and the webpage renders.

does this give you any clues to where the problem lays?
thank again,
disorderly

eureka!

i think i know what the problem is
when i set up my webserver i gave it the internal network address: 192.168.x.x. it doesn't know it's also supposed to be 66.187.x.x.

i'm confused as to how the server should have 2 IP addreses - internal & external

i have a VirtualHostName block set up in apache as 192.x.x.x and 66.187.x.x, but how would the server know that's its address - right??

ok, so would i add it's address & domain name in /etc/hosts as:
192.168.x.x servername
127.0.0.1 servername localhost.localdomain localhost
--> add 66.187.x.x

or change /etc/network?

this has to be getting close!
