Upacking archives

I have donwloaded a tar.gz file, and am trying to uppack the thing, but it keeps getting errors.

I am using tar -xf [filename].tar.gz but all that happens is that it just sits there and does nothing.

Am I using the wrong command?

And for reasons for errors (if/when they occur) use the -v option:
tar xvzf
The -xf is if you gunzip it first:
gunzip filename.tar.gz | tar xf

Cool
