BTW, you only need to specify a path to the file if you are not already in the dir where you want the file created.

So I'll put it another way: Chrism01:
To make sure that I understand what you said-

If I'm not in the directory (bashrc where I want the new file to go) than I need to specify the path like you've said?

Yeah... more clearly:

If you are in a dir called eg /home/yourname, then 'vi file' will open the file in that dir (ie the current dir, as supplied by the 'pwd' cmd).
If you are in /home/yourname and you want to create a file in eg /opt, then the cmd would be 'vi /opt/filename'.

Note that 'hidden' files in your home dir (as stored in $HOME) start with a dot '.' eg including .bashrc, .bash_profile.

To see them, you need the -a flag to the ls cmd thus
