tar story continuing :-)

I read trickykid's link on how to install tar packages and don't really know where i'm exactly (BTW i've downloaded audiogalaxy , firestarter , mosfet and pablorg ) altough i think i did the first part ok, i'm going to put the setps i've taken already so someone can help me out :

-open midnight commander(never did before but i guess i manage to copy the files from where i downloaded to usr/src
- tar xvzf (each file name at a time ).tar.gz (4 times)
- make

and nothing more because i was scared of not making it right ( as happend before) i did it on mc and then went to the directory where i had the files and i was abble to read everything inside them (readme and install files, and a lot of other stuff that i don't know ). i think my next step would be make install but i'm not shure , help please.

PS how can i see what comes out from command line on mc , i wrote the above but i didn't get to see anything .thanks

Usually when installing from source you need to do
./configure
make
make install (as root)
If there are any variations to this the details will be in the install.txt or readme.txt files.

This is fairly obvious but here goes just in case.
After you untar the files you will have a new directory with the name of the file you untarred.
cd into that directory BEFORE doing what Aussie says & that should be it

Quote:
gzip : stdin: not in gzip format tar child returned status 1 tar : error exit delayed from previous errors
