Stuck after a /etc/init.d/gdm start

Hello,

Thank you for reading my post.

1) I just installed Debian Squeeze ("Standard system utilities" only) on a machine.
2) Then I apt-get installed:
Code:
> apt-get install xserver-xorg-core gdm gnome-core
3) Then I launched:
Code:
> /etc/init.d/gdm start
Now, I'm totally stuck.
The upper part of the screen is divided into four parts displaying the screen before I launched the "gdm start" command (very very small, quasi unreadable).
Ctrl + Alt + F1 doesn't put me in the character console 1.
Control + Alt + Backspace doesn't restart the X server.
And worse, now "gdm" is automatically started at restart.

Any idea what's happening? Can you help me?
Best regards,
--
Léa

Xorg is the X server and GDM is the GNOME Display Manager. Any problems that Xorg logs will be in /var/log/Xorg.*.log and for GDM in /var/log/gdm/*.log. Should check those. GDM being start on reboot means you're in runlevel 5. Starting the machine in runlevel 3 will prohibit GDM / Xorg from starting (see settings in /etc/inittab ). Not sure if you installed any but you probably also want to install a Window Manager (WM) and possibly a Desktop environment (DE).

Hello unSpawn,

Thank you for your answer.
As I don't really need a graphical interface on that computer, I decided not to install one.
This is an old machine which is a server in my network... it will do without a graphical interface.

Best regards,

If so, why install X or gdm? I thought those were not required for a text-only console. Am I wrong?

@towheedm
No of course.
I would have preferred to have a working graphical interface (especially for the cut/copy/paste and screen scrolling functionalities) but I know what a struggle it can be to make it work (the X server, etc.) and I already have a bigger problem with another machine so for now it will do if you know what I mean...
Best regards,
