sound driver shipped in kernel, not listed in xconfig
My sound card is an avance ac97, drivers for which I believe are shipped with the 2.4.24 kernel - I can see it in /usr/src/linux-2.4.24/drivers/sound/ : there are several files eg ac97.c, ac97.h etc.
However when I try xconfig I can't see it under sound, or anywhere else. Same goes for menuconfig.
Can anyone suggest what might be wrong please?
Things I have checked:
I have tried "prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers" incase it was hidden for that reason.
Yes, I AM using the correct kernel source, and my symlink DOES point to the 2.4.24 source.
The driver is included in the 2.4.23 kernel too (in the sense that I can see it in the same place), but I have the same problem finding it using the 2.4.23 source. I'm not sure I want to try the 2.6 kernel yet, so I haven't checked there.
ac97 alone doesn't refer to a specific card but rather to a standard (i think) that a lot of soundcards use. You could take a look at www.alsa-project.org and search for your card in the soundcardlist, and use the alsa drivers instead of oss in kernel 2.4.x
knowing that ac97 isn't the name of my sound card was important step number one (so thanks for that) and then lspci pretty much did the trick for me (thank you too).
lspci told me I had an intel device (though it wasn't more specific than that), and with there only being one intel option in the kernel I chose that. Some googling made me choose another couple of "could-be" options in the kernel (to hedge my bets), and following the recompile it was a simple matter of trying out the different modules and seeing which worked.
Thanks very much for your help; you got me out of a hole and back on the right track. I'm very grateful, and the sound is now working wonderfully.
