Question Shell Prompt

Hey y'all,

My computer got really screwed up and it seems I have enabled some wierd service that doesn't agree with my hardware.

I was just wondering if there is a way to get into shell prompt at the inital boot and recover my files (maybe there if some shell prompt you can put on a floppy, or some command that lets you get in)

Peace,

You can use the first CD of your install disks as a rescue disk. Pop it in, boot from it type in 'linux rescue' as the boot prompt. In most cases, it will mount your root partition under /mnt/sysimage; if not, you can do it yourself.

You may be able to 'ifconfig' your ethernet interface from the rescue prompt, dont know as I have never tried it. Is your zip drive internal or usb/firewire?

In my opinion, you should try to get your system back up on its feet. see man chkconfig to disable/enable services. You may also do it manually by deleting/adding symlinks under /etc/rc.d/rc<runlevel here>.d

What is the error you're getting anyway? Make it a habit to post the exact error message if you're getting any.

Hey!

The error is that after my computer boots up to the login stage (to the text based login), the screen starts to flicker and I can't input anything (this is happening because I enabled some service that doesn't agree with my hardware).

==============================================
Things I already tried under x login:

-disabling services using interactive start-up
-trying grep ^id command

(I have asked other on another post how to do deal with services but nothing helped so I decided to do linux rescue)

==============================================

I'm sorry about the double posts, I wasn't aware of that rule.

Peace,
