I have a collection of about 200 DVDs. The storage space they take up is getting a little out of hand. Since I have a DivX-capable DVD player, I've started ripping them and encoding them as DivX, and can now get about 5 films on a DVD-R. However, its taking forever.
I've got a plan to make a HTPC, and was wondering whether there are any linux programs that might allow me to rip a DVD while watching it, capturing all the subtitles that don't get picked up when ripping normally (as I've found by ripping the bourne identity). That way I can just watch the DVDs as normal, they get ripped as I watch, and I can put the originals into storage in the attic.
Bloody hell! I use DVDDecrypter on windows xp, using my 2Ghz/512Mb Dell, and it takes about 4 mins for the average 2hr film. But thats just a straight rip, without watching the film.
Originally posted by Moloko I don't think the processor can keep up ripping while watching. The last time I ripped a DVD it took about 6 hours, much longer than the actual film.
I don't know about the other user stating it takes 4 mins, maybe with the crappiest quality ever but I can rip movies with acidrip in about 2 to 3 hours, depending on the quality I rip them with, that's encoding too on a 2Ghz processor. It seems most will encode in the amount of time the actual movie or show is in...
DVDDecrypter strips the movie from the DVD into a video and an audio file. I then have to merge them (takes another 5 mins) and then use Dr DivX to encode, which takes a few hours.
I was just wondering whether I could maybe capture the output from the player and encode it on-the-fly. That would be useful: slap in a film, press "play & encode" on the HTPC menu, and watch at my leisure. If I'm capturing the output rather than encoding the files direct from the DVD, I can ensure that I'm capturing all the subtitles for the film. DVDDecrypter's great, but after trying it with The Last Samurai and encoding to DivX I found that there were no subtitles. And I don't speak Japanese.
