ram image not finding root block (3,1) partition


Using stock generic, single processor 2.6.21.1 kernel. Can't get ram disk image to mount root partition. It doesn't see the root block (3,1). I've tried for 3 days now. Have exhausted possible explanations. I've used mkinitrd to make the image, which is seen. But I just can't get the image to find the root block. Using lilo.

What is your hard drive controller? Can you give us an 'lspci', maybe dmesg? What type of hard drive? SATA, IDE, any idea?

I'm using kernel 2.6.21.1-huge to produce this. I'm using Slackware 10.2 with version 11 upgrades.

Are you certain that you have support in your non-working kernel for EXT3 and VFS? Otherwise it is your hard drive controller that doesnt have support in your non-working kernel. Ensure that your filesystem (EXT3) is supported in your kernel first.

My generic-2.6.21.1 has modules for ext2, ext3. The config file calls the file ext2 and ext3 file systems as modules with the initrd image. The config file sets up the IDE drive with "CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDISK=y".
